Salt Spring Island is one of expansive views over ocean inlets and rugged coastline, where eagles soar and deer meander nonchalantly down the roads. Historically, many came here to start a new life free of societal constraints, attracting people from different cultures and for many this rural island, represents a similar ideal. Diverse, artistic, and individualistic, the residents are as interesting as the beautiful landscape they find themselves in.
It is home to some of the best boating in the world. Set in an ocean studded with many smaller islands, Salt Spring is the most southernly, the largest, and also the most populated. Ganges is the main town center and is famous for its Saturday Market. A Studio Tour is a great way to meet the artisans and get to know the island. Galleries, restaurants, theaters and shops abound and there is lots to do with golf courses, hiking trails, parks and a choice of several lakes to swim in.
Explorer James Douglas wrote in 1853 that the discovery of the salt springs on the island would “become a wealth to the country.” This has borne out to be true but not in the way he meant. For tourism, vacationing, or “owning a piece of paradise,” the real estate market is distinct to this community.
